My research compares 3 case studies of vernacular architecture in deserts, polar zones and rainforests. I analysed material life cycles, construction techniques, solar strategies and environmental responses for each case study. I conducted research using a self developed typology matrix based from R.W Brunskill's framework and Mahoney's Tables to analysis climatic conditions. My research proposes how indigenous architectural principles can inform regenerative, climate adaptive design in a future of extreme weather due to climate change.

Case study 1: Deserts The Dakhla and Kharga Oases, Egypt
Due to extreme heat, vernacular architecture in these regions adapted, with 100cm thick clay and mud walls with a high thermal mass.
Walls in the Oases are tall with sheltered streets and central courtyards creating shade.

Case study 2: Polar zones Ne’en Kan, Goahti and Igloo architecture, Canadian and Scandinavian Arctic
Due to a lack of sunlight hours in polar zones, vernacular architecture in these regions adapted, with sunken homes, limited openings and thick walls.

Case study 3: Rainforests Maloca architecture, Northwestern Brazilian Amazon
Due to extreme moisture, heat and rain in rainforests, vernacular architecture in these regions adapted, with lightweight timber structures, elevated floors and continuous ventilation.

Conclusion
This research shows how vernacular architecture offers regenerative, climate adaptive strategies for contemporary design. By analysing material cycles, construction logics and climate responsive forms across extreme environments, the study provides principles for creating buildings that work with environmental forces rather than against them.
